The Spark Bird Project was founded and is led by Jenn Lodi-Smith, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology at Canisius University and scholar-in-residence at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute. She serves as secretary/treasurer for the Association for Research in Personality, as associate editor of Journal of Personality, on the board of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology and Birds on the Niagara, and as mentor to the WNY Young Birders Club.
After spending a number of years looking for ways to intersect her passion for nature and her expertise in personality science, she got the spark for The Spark Bird Project while at Hog Island Audubon Family Camp when she learned about the concept of spark birds! Her spark birds are her kiddos who helped her notice birds and then fall in love with birding and her dear friend and colleague ornithologist Sara Morris who opened her eyes and so many opportunities to appreciate birds. Since then, she has had transformative moments with a fledgling Great Horned Owl, flocks of Atlantic Puffins, a friendly Black-throated Green Warbler, and a fishing Barred Owl!

My name is Kayla Gajewski, and I’m a second-year student at Canisius University. I’m dual majoring in Digital Media Arts and Creative Writing, and I am passionate about combining storytelling and design to create meaningful and impactful projects.
My love for storytelling began with books–whether I’m writing, designing, or imagining new worlds, I’m driven by the power of creativity to inspire and connect people. I am so excited to help edit and produce the Spark Bird Podcast.
